Buy Boilies – Boilie Brands & Types Compared

Buying boilies at Carp Austria means you don't pick bait by its packaging – you compare it live. Freshness, texture, boilie size, solubility, hookbait presentation and advice from the manufacturer decide which boilie suits your water, the season, your baited spot and your rig. This guide covers the standard size, small, medium and large boilies, pop-up boilies, wafters, feed boilies and comparing boilie manufacturers side by side at Carp Austria.

Buy boilies without getting it wrong: which type suits your water, the season and your rig?

Not every boilie suits every situation. A fruity boilie can be strong on short summer sessions, while fishmeal boilies often make more sense on longer-term baited spots in autumn. Small 12–16 mm boilies can work better in cold water and with cautious carp. 20 mm is the standard size. Medium 24/26 mm boilies and large boilies from 28 mm (up to about 40 mm) are used more selectively when you want to target bigger carp and cut down on nuisance fish.

So if you want to buy boilies, don’t just compare price and brand, but also size, texture, freshness, solubility, attractant profile and hookbait presentation. That’s exactly the comparison you can make directly at Carp Austria: see, smell and feel the boilies and talk to the manufacturers about how best to use them.

This buying guide shows which boilies suit which situation: fishmeal boilie or fruity flavour, small 12–16 mm boilies, the standard 20 mm size, medium 24/26 mm boilies, feed boilie or hookbait, pop-up boilie or wafter. The article takes a neutral look at types, sizes, applications and buying decisions — with a direct route to the full overview of boilie manufacturers at Carp Austria.

Buying boilies: choosing the right size, type and hookbait
When you buy boilies, freshness, texture, size, solubility and hookbait presentation matter more than price alone. 20 mm is the standard boilie size. Small 12–16 mm boilies are often strong in cold water and with cautious fish. Medium 24/26 mm boilies and large boilies from 28 mm are used more selectively for bigger carp and fewer nuisance fish. Pop-ups often come in 12, 16 and 20 mm; wafters in 16, 20 and 24/26 mm. Boilie sizes can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Buying boilies – types, quality and applications at a glance

Boilies are one of the key bait types in modern carp fishing. What gets you bites isn’t the biggest amount of bait, but a bait that’s in the right place at the right time: matched to the season, angling pressure, type of bottom, amount of bait and rig.

Freshness, texture, size, solubility and attractant profile determine how a boilie works in the water. Fishmeal boilies, fruity boilies, spicy flavours, pop-up boilies, wafters and feed boilies each do a different job on the spot. A well-thought-out combination often works better than a single flavour. How boilies are put together and which types there are is explained in the complete boilie guide.

Buying boilies at Carp Austria

With more than 25 boilie and bait brands, Carp Austria at the Arena Nova Wiener Neustadt gives you a direct overview of boilies, hookbaits, pop-up boilies, wafters, liquids, pellets, bait mixes and specialist boilie manufacturers. The advantage is the direct comparison: flavours, smell, texture, advice and applications are easier to judge on site than from product photos in an online shop.

The show deals brochure comes out at the end of November and brings together the exhibitors’ offers, new products and promotions. The full list of manufacturers is on the Boilie Manufacturers & Bait Brands page.

Which boilie should you buy? – the right choice for each situation

Cheap boilies – what really counts

Buying cheap boilies doesn’t mean skimping on bait. Good value comes when the amount of bait, quality and application match. For larger baited spots, feed boilies can make sense if ingredients, texture and solubility are right. If you want to fish your own recipe in large quantities, a boilie rolling service is the alternative. With hookbaits, precision counts: hookbait, pop-up boilie or wafter have to suit your feed boilies, your rig and the situation on the water.

At Carp Austria you can check this difference directly: How does the boilie smell? How does it break? How fresh does the batch look? Which flavour suits silt, weed, cold water or a baited spot? That makes for a fair comparison, where it isn’t the lowest price that counts but the bait that makes sense on the bank.

✔️ Choose feed boilies for larger quantities by quality, freshness and value for money

✔️ Match hookbaits to your feed boilies, size and rig

✔️ Check show deals and bulk discounts for larger quantities

✔️ Compare boilie manufacturers by raw ingredients, texture, solubility and application

Choosing the right boilie size – small, standard, medium or large?

Boilie size has a direct effect on the risk of nuisance fish, how the bait is picked up and the presentation. 20 mm is considered the standard size for many carp fishing situations. Small boilies of 12–16 mm suit cold water, cautious fish and short sessions. Medium 24/26 mm boilies are used more selectively when you want to target bigger carp. Large boilies from 28 mm (up to about 40 mm) are specialist baits for selective fishing, big baited spots or waters with lots of nuisance fish.

In spring and winter, smaller baits, soluble hookbaits and small amounts of bait often make sense. In summer and autumn, more nutritious boilies, pellets, particles and well-matched bait mixes can be used more heavily.

  • Small 12–16 mm boilies for winter, short sessions and cautious fish
  • 20 mm as the standard size for many waters, seasons and rigs
  • 24/26 mm as the medium size for more targeted fishing for bigger carp
  • 28 mm and up (to about 40 mm) as the large specialist size for selective situations, big baited spots and fewer nuisance fish

Boilie sizes can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Combining boilies, pop-up boilies, wafters and bait

Boilies are rarely used on their own. Strong baited spots often come from combinations: boilies, pellets, particles, groundbait and liquids complement each other. The hookbait has to fit the baiting strategy.

A bottom bait suits classic hair rigs on a firm bottom. Pop-up boilies lift the hookbait clear of silt and weed. Wafters balance out the hook and suit cautious carp on pressured waters. Pellets and particles add to the feeding effect and keep carp actively on the spot.

  • Bottom baits for classic hair rigs and baited spots
  • Pop-up boilies for chod rigs, spinner rigs and difficult bottoms
  • Wafters for light, balanced hookbait presentations
  • Pellets, particles and groundbait to complement the baited spot

Which boilies suit which water?

The best boilie always depends on the water. A clear gravel pit with high angling pressure calls for different baits than a coloured club lake, a river or a heavily fished day-ticket water. That’s why a neutral comparison of manufacturers makes more sense than a blanket flavour recommendation.

Situation Sensible boilie choice Why
Clear water, high angling pressure subtle wafters, smaller hookbaits, natural colours cautious carp often test hookbaits for longer
Silty bottom Pop-up boilies, chod rig, spinner rig the hookbait stays visible and cleanly presented
Weed and soft bottom Pop-ups, chod rig, light leads the hookbait hovers above the weed instead of disappearing into it
Firm to slightly soft bottom Bottom baits, wafters, snowman the hookbait sits naturally among the feed boilies
Longer baiting campaign Feed boilies, pellets, particles, fishmeal boilies carp should keep coming back to the spot
Short session / no pre-baiting fruity boilies, eye-catching hookbaits, little bait quick triggers matter more than large amounts of bait

Comparing boilie manufacturers – which baits suit your approach?

If you want to buy boilies, don’t decide on brand or flavour alone. On the bank, other questions count: should the bait work fast or last on the spot for a long time? Are you fishing over silt, weed or a hard bottom? Is it about short sessions without pre-baiting, a targeted pre-baiting campaign or selective fishing for big carp?

At Carp Austria you can compare exactly these differences directly: feed boilies, hookbaits, pop-up boilies, wafters, pellets, liquids, dips, boosters and complete bait systems aren’t just there as product photos – you can judge them live. Smell, texture, hardness, solubility and advice from the manufacturer make the difference.

Special editions and show-exclusive boilies

At Carp Austria, several boilie manufacturers bring show editions, new hookbaits, special sizes, limited boilie ranges and bundle deals that aren’t always available in regular shops.

That’s exactly what makes the show so appealing: see, smell and compare baits and talk to the manufacturers directly about application, angling pressure, season and baiting strategy.

Some flavours are added to the range after the show, others remain show-only products. If you’re looking for new boilie flavours the carp in your home water don’t know yet, you’ll often find interesting batches for the coming season here.

The most interesting details come up right at the stand: where recipes are explained, hookbaits are shown and show deals are compared live.

A note on the show deals brochure

The show deals brochure comes out at the end of November. It brings together manufacturer offers, new products and promotions and gives you a first overview before you compare the details directly at the stands.

Cheap boilies – show prices, deals and what no one else offers

Different terms apply at the show than in regular shops. Many manufacturers offer show prices, bundle deals and special quantities that aren’t available online — often because buying direct on site means no shipping costs or logistics. On top of that come various show deals that exhibitors only announce at their stand: tiered pricing, combined offers of feed boilies and hookbaits, free extras and bulk discounts.

You often only find out the full deal at the stand.

The advantage no tackle shop can offer

Carp in heavily fished waters already know the usual boilies from tackle shops. Standard boilies, standard flavours, standard sizes — conditioned carp have often seen these baits many times. Boilies from specialist manufacturers that are hard to find in regular shops, on the other hand, are often new to these fish. Fresh recipes, their own ingredients, additives and extracts the carp in that water don’t know yet — that can make the difference between a blank and a bite.

On top of that, the focus at the show is on freshly produced batches — not stock that’s been sitting on a shelf for months. Fresh boilies smell more intense, release attractants more actively and can be compared directly with other flavours.

  • Check show prices, bundle deals and tiered pricing directly with the manufacturer
  • Compare various show deals — many are only announced at the stand
  • Check fresh batches straight from the manufacturer instead of old stock
  • Discover boilies that conditioned carp in your home water don’t know yet
  • Personal advice: which boilie for which water and which season

Boilie know-how for better buying decisions

Boilies shouldn’t be judged on taste, packaging or brand name alone. What matters is nutritional value, solubility, digestibility, attractant profile, processing and how they’re actually used on the water.

On many waters you see boilies where it’s questionable whether they still have anything to do with responsible bait quality. That’s exactly why Carp Austria brings together expertise that goes beyond advertising promises, packaging blurbs and pub talk.

More knowledge. Fewer fairy tales. Better decisions on the bank – for the good of the fish and for more confidence in your own bait.
