Aluminium fishing boats: why aluminium?

Angler fishing from an aluminium fishing boat on calm water

An aluminium boat is a boat with a hull made of aluminium. It’s light but still sturdy. That’s exactly what makes it so practical for fishing.

Mitmasser sums it up: thanks to their good strength-to-weight ratio, aluminium boats get going well even with low-powered engines. Two people can carry the smaller models to the water’s edge and launch them by themselves. No launching crane, no big ramp.

The range includes aluminium boats from Motocraft, Marine, Finval and Scandica. According to the shop, Marine has separate lines for fishing, family, work and lightweight boats. Which length and which model suits your water is best worked out in a consultation in Walding.

Aluminium boat or inflatable – which one suits you?

Almost everyone buying their first fishing boat asks this question. The short answer: the aluminium boat is tougher and more stable to fish from. The inflatable is easier to transport and store.

Boat typeStrengthsTypical use
Aluminium boatlight, tough, low maintenance, fast even with a small enginerivers, reservoirs, predator fishing, trolling
Inflatable with aluminium floorhigh payload, hard to tip, room for several peoplecarp fishing, baiting up, playing fish from the boat
Inflatable with air or slatted floorsmall pack size, fits in the carsmall lakes, waters without a slipway

Mitmasser’s inflatable boats come from Honwave and are available with a slatted floor, high-pressure air floor or aluminium floor. You can row both boat types or run them with a petrol or electric motor.

Outboard or electric motor: which propulsion for your fishing boat?

Mitmasser stocks four-stroke outboards from Yamaha and Honda and is a service partner for both brands. The Honda engines use the Honda BLAST system for strong acceleration. Yamaha relies on dependable four-strokes that are easy to operate.

For many anglers, though, the electric motor is the bigger question. On many Austrian lakes, combustion engines are banned or only allowed with a permit. There, your only options are an electric motor – or oars. Before you buy, check the rules of your water and your fishing licence.

  • Petrol outboard – for the Danube, large reservoirs and long distances
  • Electric motor – quiet, for lakes with a combustion engine ban and for slowly approaching your spots
  • Oars – for small waters and as a backup you should always have on board

If you fish from a boat for pike, zander or catfish, you’ll find more on tech and boats on the page predator fishing: exhibitors, boats and tech.

Boat trailers and power generators

No trailer, no switching waters. Mitmasser sells Pega boat trailers, braked and unbraked. Which trailer fits depends on the boat’s weight and length and on your tow bar. The team will advise you and has models to look at on site.

There are also Honda power generators in several designs, including inverter generators. For long sessions at the water, when camping or in the boathouse, a quiet generator like this comes in handy.

Servicing and repairs in Walding

An outboard that packs up at the water costs you your fishing day. Mitmasser services and repairs outboard motors and trailers in its own workshop. As a Yamaha and Honda Marine service partner, the business has spare parts and accessories for both brands. According to the shop, service packages are also available for engines.

Checklist: how to find the right fishing boat

Before you buy a boat, answer these questions for yourself. That keeps the consultation short – and the boat will fit.

  • Water: Danube, reservoir, gravel pit or small pond? Current and waves call for more length and freeboard.
  • Engine rules: Is a combustion engine allowed, or only an electric motor? That decides your whole propulsion set-up.
  • Payload: How many people, how much tackle? For carp fishing, add bait, landing net and unhooking mat.
  • Transport: Trailer, car roof or inside the car? That decides between an aluminium boat and an inflatable.
  • Storage: Do you have space in a garage or boathouse – or does the boat need to pack down small?
  • Service: Who services the engine? A dealer with its own workshop nearby can save you weeks when it really matters.

Around Walding, the Danube with its impounded stretches and backwaters is right on your doorstep. For waters like these, a stable aluminium boat with an outboard is the classic choice. If you fish small lakes with an engine ban, an inflatable with an electric motor is usually the better option.
